Moves sound games from the air onto the table, so your child can sort by first sound with objects in their hands.

What to gather
Two small baskets and eight familiar objects, four starting with each of two clearly different sounds
How to present it
Show it slowly and in silence. Your hands are the lesson.
- 1Say the sound, not the letter name: this basket is for mmm.
- 2Take one object, say its name slowly stretching the first sound, then put it in the matching basket.
- 3Do two, then pass the next object over.
What to say — and what to avoid
Say
- mmmmouse. Which basket?
- Say it slowly and listen to the beginning.
Avoid
- The letter M
- No, that is the other one
Control of error
Both baskets fill evenly when the sorting is right — an uneven pile is the signal.
What to observe
Take these into the next cycle rather than judging the session.
- Do they stretch the first sound themselves?
- Do they self-correct before putting an object down?
- Do they start naming first sounds away from the table?
Simplify or extend
If it's too hard
Use two objects per sound, with sounds that are very different, such as sss and buh.
Once it's mastered
Add a third sound, then move to sandpaper letters so the sound gets its symbol.
