Put this to work this week

A week gives you what to gather, one change at home and one thing to observe. It starts with four short questions.

Readiness signs

Signs to look for, not a checklist to pass.

  • Brings both hands to the middle of an object
  • Wants to help lay the table
  • Stays with quiet work for several minutes

What to gather

Four square cloth napkins, ironed, in a small basket

How to present it

Show it slowly and in silence. Your hands are the lesson.

  1. 1Smooth one napkin flat on the table with your palms.
  2. 2Bring the bottom edge exactly to the top edge, press the fold with your hand from the middle outwards, then fold once more.
  3. 3Stack it, unfold it again, and offer the basket.

What to say — and what to avoid

Say

  • Corner to corner.
  • Press from the middle out.

Avoid

  • That is not straight
  • Here, let me fix it

Control of error

Corners that do not meet leave the fold crooked, and your child can see it before you say anything.

What to observe

Take these into the next cycle rather than judging the session.

  • Do they line the corners up before pressing?
  • Do they refold a napkin they are not happy with?
  • Do they fold anything else they find?

Simplify or extend

If it's too hard

Draw a faint line down the middle of one napkin so the fold has a target.

Once it's mastered

Move to folding into quarters, then to folding a small towel or a t-shirt.
