Making the bed
The first thing your child can put right on their own each morning, using only what is already on the bed.
- Ages
- 4–5, 5–6 years
- Prep
- No setup
Put this to work this week
A week gives you what to gather, one change at home and one thing to observe. It starts with four short questions.
Readiness signs
Signs to look for, not a checklist to pass.
- Folds a napkin or towel
- Gets out of bed and dressed with little help
- Follows a three-step sequence
What to gather
A low bed or floor mattress with one duvet and one pillow — nothing tucked under the mattress
How to present it
Show it slowly and in silence. Your hands are the lesson.
- 1Pull the duvet up from the foot of the bed with both hands until it reaches the top.
- 2Smooth it once, from the middle to each side.
- 3Put the pillow at the head, then step back and look at the whole bed.
What to say — and what to avoid
Say
- Pull it all the way up.
- Smooth it from the middle.
Avoid
- That is all crooked
- I will just redo it
Control of error
Bumps and a duvet hanging off one side are obvious from the doorway, so your child sees the result themselves.
What to observe
Take these into the next cycle rather than judging the session.
- Do they pull the duvet fully to the head of the bed?
- Do they step back and look?
- Do they do it without being reminded?
Simplify or extend
If it's too hard
Ask for the pillow only for the first week.
Once it's mastered
Add changing the pillowcase, and let them strip the bed on wash day.
