Put this to work this week
A week gives you what to gather, one change at home and one thing to observe. It starts with four short questions.
Readiness signs
Signs to look for, not a checklist to pass.
- Names familiar objects confidently
- Enjoys guessing games
- Can keep hands inside a bag without peeking
What to gather
A drawstring cloth bag and five or six familiar objects from around the house
How to present it
Show it slowly and in silence. Your hands are the lesson.
- 1Show each object and name it, then place them in the bag together.
- 2Reach in, feel one object, and say what it is before pulling it out.
- 3Take it out and check.
- 4Offer the bag to your child.
What to say — and what to avoid
Say
- I feel something round and cold.
- What do you think it is?
Avoid
- No peeking!
- That was easy
Control of error
Pulling the object out immediately confirms or corrects the guess.
What to observe
Take these into the next cycle rather than judging the session.
- Does your child describe before naming?
- Do they want harder objects?
- Do they ask to fill the bag themselves?
Simplify or extend
If it's too hard
Use three very different objects — a spoon, a ball, a pinecone.
Once it's mastered
Use pairs of similar objects, or matching pairs found by touch alone.
