Readiness signs

- Names objects around the home
- Points at pictures in books
- Matches identical objects
What to gather
Five small familiar objects and a printed or drawn picture of each, a basket
How to present it
Show it slowly and in silence. Your hands are the lesson.
- 1Lay the pictures in a row and keep the objects in the basket.
- 2Take one object, name it, and place it on its picture.
- 3Do two, then hand the basket to your child.
- 4Name each pair together at the end.
What to say — and what to avoid

- Spoon. This is a spoon.
- Where does the brush go?
Avoid
- What is this called? Tell me
- No, that is not right
Control of error
One object is left over if a match is wrong, and the mismatch is visible.
What to observe
Take these into the next cycle rather than judging the session.
- Does your child name the object as they place it?
- Do they self-correct at the end?
- Are they using new words in the day?
Simplify or extend
If it's too hard
Use three objects with photographs rather than drawings.
Once it's mastered
Match pictures to written labels once your child knows some sounds.
