Put this to work this week

A week gives you what to gather, one change at home and one thing to observe. It starts with four short questions.

Readiness signs

Signs to look for, not a checklist to pass.

  • Pulls their own shoes off
  • Notices where things belong
  • Follows a two-step instruction

What to gather

A low shelf or shallow basket by the door, at your child's height, with room for one pair

How to present it

Show it slowly and in silence. Your hands are the lesson.

  1. 1Sit down by the door and take your own shoes off.
  2. 2Place them side by side on the shelf, pointing the same way. Say nothing while you do it.
  3. 3Leave the space beside yours empty and go about your business.

What to say — and what to avoid

Say

  • Your shoes go here.
  • Side by side.

Avoid

  • How many times do I have to tell you
  • I will do it, we are late

Control of error

The empty space on the shelf is the reminder, not you.

What to observe

Take these into the next cycle rather than judging the session.

  • Do they go to the shelf without being asked?
  • Do they line the shoes up?
  • Do they notice when someone else leaves shoes out?

Simplify or extend

If it's too hard

Use a basket instead of a shelf, so shoes only have to be dropped in.

Once it's mastered

Add a hook at their height for a coat, so the whole arrival is theirs.
