Activity
SensorialUse what you own
Sorting by size, three bowls
Trains the visual discrimination that every graded Montessori material later depends on.
- Ages
- 2–3, 3–4 years
- Prep
- 5 minutes
Put this to work this week
A week gives you what to gather, one change at home and one thing to observe. It starts with four short questions.
Readiness signs
Signs to look for, not a checklist to pass.
- Groups things spontaneously
- Notices when something does not belong
- Uses a pincer grasp
What to gather
Three bowls and two clearly different sizes of pasta or buttons, a tray
How to present it
Show it slowly and in silence. Your hands are the lesson.
- 1Put the mixed objects in the middle bowl and leave the outer two empty.
- 2Pick up one object, look at it, and place it in one outer bowl without speaking.
- 3Do three or four, then slide the tray toward your child.
- 4When it is finished, mix them back together for the next time.
What to say — and what to avoid
Say
- These go here.
- You finish it.
Avoid
- No, that is the big one
- Are you sure?
Control of error
A mixed bowl at the end is visible to the child without you naming any error.
What to observe
Take these into the next cycle rather than judging the session.
- Does your child correct their own sorting?
- Do they sort by a rule you did not name, like colour?
- Do they repeat it once it is easy?
Simplify or extend
If it's too hard
Use two bowls and two very different objects.
Once it's mastered
Add a third size, or sort by two attributes at once.
