Work tray

A tray tells the child where an activity begins and ends, and makes it carryable — which is what makes independent choosing possible.

2–3, 3–4, 4–5, 5–6 years

Put this to work this week

A week gives you what to gather, one change at home and one thing to observe. It starts with four short questions.

What it isolates

The boundary of one piece of work.

Household and DIY options first

Substitutes come before anything to buy, with the trade-off stated.

A baking tray or serving tray

Use any flat tray with a lip.

Trade-off: Often too large; the work spreads out and loses its edges.

A shallow basket

Good for dry work.

Trade-off: No lip for spills, so not for water.

Cut a rim of card around a stiff base if you want a tray sized exactly to a shelf.

If you do buy it

  • Small enough to carry with two hands
  • Has a raised lip
  • Light when full

When to skip it

Never buy a set of matching trays before you know what work your child returns to.
